Polyacrylamide, abbr. PAM, is a kind of water soluble polymer, has unique effect to increase the viscosity of water or to promote the flocculation of particles present in water, it can also reduce the frictional resistance between the liquid.


It is widely used in many fileds like Water Treatment, Oil Exploration, Sludge Dewatering, Paper Making, Textile, Sugar Making,  Coal washing,  Incense Making and Soil Erosion Control, etc.

Textile

As a textile coating slurry sizing to reduce the loom short head and shedding, enhance the antistatic properties of textiles.

Suger Making

Description and Purpose of Polycrylamide / PAM used for Soil Erosion Control


>> PAM increases the soils available pore volume, thus increasing infiltration and reducing the quantity of stormwater runoff that can cause erosion. Suspended sediments from PAM treated soils exhibit increased flocculation over untreated soils.The increased flocculation aids in their deposition, thus reducing stormwater runoff turbidity and improving water quality. 


>> PAM may be used as a water treatment additive to remove suspended particles from runoff. PAM may also be used to provide an appropriate medium for the growth of vegetation for further stabilization.

PAM application for Erosion Control:

>> Irrigation Induced Soil Erosion

Increases infiltration of irrigation water & remove suspended particles from runoff.

>> Wind or Precipitation Induced Soil Erosion

Bind soil particles, especially clays, to hold them on site. 

PAM advantages:

  Improves stability of problem soils to prevent soil detachment (i.e. prevents erosion) ;
  Provides quick stabilization where vegetation has yet to be established;
  Promotes flocculation (reduces settling time) of smallest particles;
  Increases soil pore volume and permeability, thus decreasing imperious cover;
  Less obtrusive than some conventional measures - doesn't interfere with construction machinery/activity;
  Convenient and easy to apply and store along with other soil amendments (fertilizer, mulch, etc.) with conventional seeding, mulching, or irrigation equipment;
  Reduces seed, pesticide, and fertilizer (phosphorus and nitrogen) losses that hinder vegetation establishment on site, increase costs, and promote nutrient and chemical loading offsite;
  Reduces windborne dust conditions.

General Criteria Applicable To All Purposes

>> Only Anionic Polyacrylamide should be used for erosion control. 


>> The acrylamide should meet monomer limits of

<0.05%


>> The PAM should have a charge density of 10 to 55% by weight and molecular weight of 6 to 24 mg/mole.

>> in surface irrigation: not exceed 10 ppm of pure form PAM;
>> In sprinkler irrigation: not exceed 4 pounds per acre per application event.
>> Wind or Precipitation soil erosion control: not exceed 200 pounds per acre per year.

** PAM application rates may need to be adjusted based on soil properties, slope, and type of erosion targeted.
